Dr. Thomas Barnett is in his eleventh year teaching at University of Wisconsin – River Falls and lives in western Wisconsin with his wife Chris and their three sons, Matthew, Tyler, and Connor. As a Professor of Music, his emphasis is in Trumpet Performance and Instruction, River Falls Brass, Music Theory, and directing the Concert/Pep Band. Before coming to UWRF, Dr. Barnett taught at the University of Missouri – Columbia, Truett-McConnell College (GA), and Georgia College and State University. He earned a B.M. from The University of Akron (OH), M.M. from Northwestern University (IL), and D.M.A. from The University of Georgia. His principal teachers are Scott Johnston, Vincent Cichowicz, and Fred Mills. Dr. Barnett is active as a performer and clinician. He is one of the founding members of the River Falls Brass, faculty brass quintet at UWRF. January 2004, the group performed in Hawaii at the 2nd annual International Conference on Arts and Humanities where they presented “Music from around the world.” Recently, he taught at the New England Music Camp in Sydney, Maine. There he gave several performances and master classes. The River Falls Brass Chamber Music Camp began the summer of 2004 and will continue every summer for years to come. This weeklong camp provides chamber music experiences for students that have completed grades 7-12. All rehearsals and concerts take place on UWRF’s beautiful campus. College credit is now available for students that have completed grades 11 and 12. During the summer of 2001, he spent four weeks as a guest artist in Brazil. His residency in Londrina included master classes, brass quintet coaching, and several solo and chamber music performances. These performances were highlighted with 2 live local TV broadcasts and 1 live national TV broadcast. Dr. Barnett also appeared as a featured soloist with the Banda de Metais Champagnat of Londrina. During his stay in Vale Veneto, an Italian community in the foothills of southern Brazil, Dr. Barnett gave daily master classes, coached brass quintets, and additionally performed as a soloist with the festival orchestra. He has performed with numerous professional ensembles in North America, South America and Western Europe including Orquesta Sinfonica Del Estado de Mexico, Keith Brion’s New Sousa Band, Aurora Brass, Savannah Symphony, Greenville Symphony, AIMS Festival Orchestra (Graz, Austria), Macon Symphony, Akron Symphony, and Canton Symphony. In 1995, he soloed with The University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra as a concerto competition winner. As a charter member of the Bulldog Brass Quintet, Dr. Barnett served as a guest Artist/Adjudicator at the second biennial International Brass Quintet Competition and Festival at The University of Georgia (March, 2001). As an active member of the International Trumpet Guild, Dr. Barnett has served on the scholarship committee, and book review board.
